Angus MacAskill
« on: Saturday 23 August 14 04:17 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information: Angus MacAskill born abt 1804 Diraclett.  I would like to know who his father was...  and if he had siblings...  I have been told that he married Effy Munro, after she died he married Christina MacDonald, they sailed on the "Hercules" with 2 children in 1853...  Christina died on the voyage...  Angus married again, but not to Margaret McKeegan as stated on Ancesty.com... he did marry again: to Marion McDonald in Adelaide 3 October 1854...  Angus could be my GGGGfather.. to find this out, I have to know who his parents were....   Can anyone tell me?   Thankyou...

There were a few McAskill families on the same ship so i would say they were all related somehow, brothers maybe.

Also who appears to be Marion McDonald was on the same ship with her husband.

Hiya Jammet tand welcome to Rootschat
1841 census when it was taken gave a leeway of 5 years for peoples ages
1841 on the Isle of Harris (presumably Diraclett ) Effy Mac Askill is born 1795 ...this could make her 10 years or more older than Angus ??
where did you get your info he was born in 1804 ??...also -I can`t find Angus on the Island in 1841 to find his year of birth ??...was he a sailor / mariner ??  and wasn`t on the Island at the time of census ?..if you have him on the census in 1841 could you post it please...

Thankyou for replying:  Going by the Ships List... in 1853 Angus MacAskill was 44 years old... that makes him abt 1809/10.. in 1851 Census I found the only Angus MacAskill aged 47 years = 1804... 111/00 009/00 013.... I have found Angus and Christina McDonald marriage 6 March 1849... no age and no fathers recorded...  But I cannot find any Birth...   Harris and St Kilda which is an Island?...   I reckon that is where he was born...   Long Island? ...  I do not know my Geography in Scotland... I am in Adelaide, Sth Australia...  I want to connect Angus to my MacDonald's (Harris)...  or find that he is not related... then I can put my search to bed...   we do have McAskill's here, but do not know if they are related...   I do have rellies on the Islands, but to get them to tell me who, what, where is near impossible... and I do not know why?...  My only other find: is Peter MacAskill and Ann Cameron Angus' parents? ...  I have Mary 1795 which is around the right time for Angus (1804)...   sorry loading all this on you...  any info would be great...  Jan..

Hi Jammett
I have just joined the rootschat board and saw your notice on Angus McAskill.  I have also been searching for info on that family and your post provided a little for me.  thank you.  Ann McAskill, or Annie as she was called, was my grandfathers mother.  She married a Paddick.  My grandfather, Richard looked a lot like her.
Have you found any other information regarding Angus family back in Scotland?  thanks.

Hello Jaygeepee,  It was a nice surprise to find that my post had been read....  I do not have much on MacAskill side, that is the problem....   I found information in Ancestry.com to be absolutely wrong...  concerning MacAskill's....  Angus did not marry Margaret ?  I dropped out of Ancestry.com, so cannot get in to correct it...  but, am thinking of joining up for 6 months after Xmas...   hopefully get a few things sorted... I haven't put any information in Ancestry.com.. but, you are quite welcomed to what  I have found...  My MacDonald's married a MacAskill...  not McAskill...  you just might be a long lost cousin!!!    Get in touch please.....   it is 35* and 36* tomorrow, and we are not even in Summer yet....    Jan...

Hi,
The spelling of names was very fluid in the early 188s so maybe best to search using M*k*l that should pick up most variants.  For instance, the family listed below Angus and family on the ship's list a Donald and Christy McAskill are to be found on the 1851 census  listed as 'McKaskil' and he's showing as already 64 then!

Just curious but how does knowing who Angus' parents help make the link to you?

  :)  Hi Jammett
I am in West Aust.  I did a fair amount of family search a few years back and left it, was wandering around today and saw your post on Angus.  I think he and his family of Christiana, Effy and Annie were the only ones of his family on the Hercules.  No other McAskill came from the estate of Lord Dunmore Harris in Inverness.  I found also Effy on the 1841 census aged 46 as you did, no sign of Angus but I did see him on the 1851 census aged 47.  Seems like he may not have known when he was born as the ship records show he was born 1808 and aged 44 when he came to SA - maybe there was an age limit?! and he put his age down.   I have not found evidence of children to Effy and left behind in Scotland but that may have happened considering the ages.  How did you find Christiana died on the way here?  I have tried to find ships records but cannot.  This is definitely my family, this is my dad's great grandfather.  My grandfather's mother was Annie.  I need to do more research on this.  I should go to SA!  Or Scotland!!  cheers!
