Ann Steels christening is on familysearch   ???

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J7SN-TDD

So is Jonathan's marriage
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NXKZ-VQV

Perhaps you should be searching there for any other possible family members  ;)

I think that's a different Jonathan

Ann Steel, born in 1817 is the daughter of Jonathan, born 1777, his son was Jonathan Steel born in 1751

The Jonathan Steel on the 1851 census was Jonathan Steel, born in 1783 was the son of John Steel and Isabel Haddon

Ann bapt 1817 is shown  with parents Jonathan & Margaret and the marriage for Jonathan I have given you is with wife Margaret.

Have you seen the actual PR's for Stapleton or are you relying on transcriptions.

I note that one of the records on familysearch shows that the father of Jonathan chr 1778 is decd.  Does that mean he died when the child was an infant or could it be an adult baptism for the Jonathan that married Isabel later that month  :-\

You would probably be better off visiting an LDS family history centre and looking at the registers which you can hire in. They often hold snippets of information which can confirm whether you are following the right line.  Transcripts should always be checked with the source as they are often wrong.

Jonathan did die in 1778, but the Jonathan born in 1783 is not the same person as the one whom died in 1778

He couldn't be the same person if he died before he was born  ;)

What I was asking is was the 1778 baptism for an infant or adult.
