Help needed with Hannah Bousfield (1821-1861)
« on: Wednesday 27 August 14 13:38 BST (UK) »
Hannah Bousfield m. William Shepherd on 10 July 1837 in Westmorland, her approx. dob 1821 and death 1861, trying to obtain some info regarding her birth in order to obtain the correct birth certificate.  Perhaps a marriage look-up in the registers would reveal the parents, familysearch.org only shows William's father, Thomas. Any info would be appreciated.

Civil Registration only began in 1837, so there will be no birth cert for people born before then.
You will be reliant on Parish Records of a christening, if they were christened.

Have you found the couple in 1851 and 1861 censuses to see where she says she was born? Then you will know where to start looking for a PR

The marriage cert will only give fathers names for the bride and groom. Unless of course either was illegitimate and left it blank.

@LIZDB you have been a great help, Parish Registers are new territory for me, I haven't a clue as to how to proceed now. Will definitely need guidance.  I guess I would need to find the parish where Hannah Bousfield was christened and the year she was born (approx. 1816); More likely the Parish would be Kendal Parish Church as the later generations were christened here. Now, how does one get access to the PR when we are unable to go in person to a records office?

Things you can try -

1) Look at www.familysearch.org.
Lots of events from parish registers on there. But do beware - it is not complete, and does have inaccuracies so dont just grab at a name that looks vaguely right or in tbe right general area. It may be that the actual person you are looking for is not on there. But it is a great resource, and tbe best place to start.
2) put a request on here, clearly titled that you want a PR look up for 1816ish in Kendal, attach a link to the URL of this thread, and ask if anyone has access to the relevant PRs.  Someone local may know of a specialised website where they are online, or someone may have purchased a CD of Kendal PRs, or someone may even be going to the records office and will look for you
3) Google to find the relevant Local Record Office, and emailthem to see if they do look ups.

Or if you have a Latter Day Saints Library near to you, you can order the relevant microfilm for a small charge and I think you have about 3 months to view it.  It's surprising how many libraries there are both in the UK and abroad.

Family History is a Pandora's box if you don't like what you see find a new hobby, only concentrate on the proven facts and not the facts you think you know.
