but he received the Silver War Medal.
The SWB wasn't a medal. It was a badge to be worn on civilian clothing to indicate a man had served but been rendered unfit for further service.

Quite possibly but excuse my ignorance as FindMyPast and Ancestry list them as a Medal. ;D

The category is probably awards & decorations. So it was be an award rather than a decoration.
Ancestry has them listed as:
UK, Silver War Badge Records, 1914-1920

Possibly, but my grandfather also appears in the WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards, which, although admittedly is a different format card than anyone receiving a medal, does appear in that collection on ancestry.  Now whether ancestry have it incorrectly indexed is another matter.

Couldn't find anything, which seems surprising really even if he was a reserve if he was declared unfit to serve at one point.

Just to clear up any confusion this is the War Office Roll for the SWB.As you can see it's not a medal.

Yes I have a copy of that for my grandfather, but my grandfather also has an entry under the WW1 Medal Roll Index Cards on ancestry.  That entry does mention "cause of discharge" at the top and at the bottom - Action Taken - List CC/143.  The latter I would imagine is something to do with the SWB.  It's obviously different to those for soldiers who received medals.

As I'd prefer not to mention my grandfather's name online, attached is two "snips" from his Medal Roll Index Card which appears on ancestry, namely part of the top and part of the bottom.
