William Whitehouse 36th foot regiment
« on: Saturday 30 August 14 07:30 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I was just wondering if anyone could please help me find some information out about William Whitehouse?

Now I must say I am not sure if this is the same William I am looking for or not but it sounds a lot like him.

All I know about my William Whitehouse is that he married a Catherine Cain/Kain in 1856 Western Australia, there is some news paper reports of a William and Catherine Whitehouse on TROVE around this time, The William Whitehouse was from the 36th foot regiment.
Note: how would I look up the regiment?

I have found a web site with some info on it link http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8749083?descriptiontype=Full&ref=WO+97/535/126

it said that William Whitehouse was discharged at aged 40.

William and Catherine then moved to South Australia (I have talked about this part before) William died in 1878 age 65. on his death certificate he is listed as a seaman.

can anyone help?

Thanks you

There are army discharge papers for William Whitehouse of 36th Regiment on FindMyPast. Born circa 1812 in Frome, Somerset, discharged at Chatham in 1853 intending to reside in Frome. By trade a tailor, not  a sailor.

Hi shaunj,

Thank you for your reply, funny you say that about tailor/sailor on his death certificate it states seaman but on his sons marriage certificate it is tailor.

now I guess the question I have is was he a convict or a prison guard when he came to Australia?
I have looked under both and I can not seem to find the information, I know not all the guard and their families are listed but is there anywhere I can find this information?

so if he got discharged in 1853 he would have 4 years to get to Australia get married and have a child, that's if it is the same William Whitehouse.

Is there any more information about the William Whitehouse from Frome, Somerset?

Looking at the references in Trove, he was an "enrolled pensioner". Presumably a guard. See http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/convicts/pen-wa.html
