I'll do as you suggest - I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed with notifications when I started, so dropped them. I may start again, but will certainly try "new replies" first

This might help too - as you said the Search wasn't much good for finding your own topics.

If you press the "Search" that's on the brown menu bar above (rather than the green Search button), then you can put in your own usename in the bit where it says "By user:"

This will allow you to search for particular names (or places, or words) that you have used in your own post.

In the image below, I've put in your username to show what I mean.
