John Trippier living in the Fylde area of Lancashire in 1772
« on: Wednesday 03 September 14 22:30 BST (UK) »
I need some help with a problem identifying a John Trippier who went to the Fylde area around 1770 and married Margaret Coleby at Kirkham Parish church. He died in 1814 aged 70 which put his birth around 1744. There are no mention of other Trippiers in the Fylde area before 1772 and therefore can only assume that John Trippier came into the area from elsewhere.
In the early 1700’s most of the Trippiers where based around the Rossendale area including Haslingden and Burnley. They were directly descended from Daniel Trippier (1653-1719). I have a reasonable trace on most of these.
As part of the ongoing search I have found 3 John Trippiers who fit the bill but as yet, after 2 yrs I still cannot find the link. Their details are as follows:

John Trippier # 1 born 1743 at Snape nr Ormskirk. Christened 15.01.1743 @ St Cuthberts Halsall.
Father Daniel born 1709 – Daniels Father John Trippier who lived @ Briercliffe, Burnley
Daniel married Martha Leatherbarrow @ St Peters Ormskirk 26.06.1741
Daniels had 4 other children, James born 1746, Elizabeth born 1748, Thomas born 1753, William born 1756.
Daniel died of suspected poisoning in 1759 and I cannot find any further details of what has happened to Martha, John and the rest of the family. I believe Martha was local to the area so have assumed she stayed local after Daniel's death.
Would appreciate any help in pointing me to where I should check next as I can only assume they have moved to another church other than the ones mentioned.

John Trippier #2 born 1743 at Broadclough. Christened 21.06.1743 @ Newchurch.
Father John born ? who married Martha Hoyle 07.02.1740 @ Newchurch.
I believe this John (b 1743) went on to marry Hannah Whild 31.12.1772 @ Newchurch so have no questions on him at the moment as I have assumed he lived his life only in the Rossendale area and is the source of most of the Trippier families in that area post 1772.

The last John Trippier #3 born 1745 at Langfield West Yorkshire. Christened 30.01.1745 @ St Marys Luddenden West Yorkshire.
Johns Father James Trippier born 1721 at Burnley. Christened 05.03.1721 @ St Peters Burnley. This James is the brother of Daniel who was the father of John #1. James, his mother and sisters were subject to a relocation notice in 1733 and was relocated from Briercliffe nr Burnley to Langfield after his father died in 1731. (Daniel was not part of this relocation)
James had numerous children in the Luddenden/Heptonstall area of West Yorkshire and I can trace everyone except John Trippier #3.
At this point I can only assume that this John has moved back into Lancashire or gone into the army or ?.
The only clues I have for Fylde John Trippier is that he called his first born daughter Martha (all 3 Johns had mothers called Martha) first born son James (John #3 had a father called James). His occupation was agricultural and not weaving etc which is at odds with the normal occupations around Rossendale and Luddenden. I believe the answer lies in finding :
1. Where John#1’s family went after the death of their father Daniel but I would appreciate any help or pointers on the subject.
2. I was informed John#1 went into the army which would explain why I can't trace but the person advising this hasn't shown the proof that I need. It is claimed he was discharged in 1790 but unable to find any records to verify this. Another John Trippier does have army records but he was born much later and discharged in Circa 1814. I would appreciate any help or pointers as to where to trace or get help with this army record
In short would appreciate any help or direction as this problem is stopping me linking up the family from present times back to the 1600's.
Regards
fredt

Hi Fredt,

Some time has elapsed since you posted this, but I am curious to know whether you got any further with your John Trippier research. I believe myself to be a descendant of this John Trippier but am also struggling to determine where he came from before moving to the Fylde area. I'd love to know whether you unearthed anything interesting.

Thanks in advance!

according to this - in 1772 at Kirkham .

Marriage: 31 Aug 1772 St Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire, England
John Tripear - the parish of St Michaels
Margt. Jolly - Eccleston
    Register: Marriages 1761 - 1775

where did you get the name Coleby from please ??

looks like this couple went to live in Eccleston where Margaret was from

Baptism: 25 Jul 1784 Copp Chapel, St Michael's on Wyre, Lancashire, England
Richard Tripear - Son of John Tripear & Margaret, his wife
    Abode: Little Eccleston
    Register: Baptisms 1772 - 1812

of course this might be the wrong John / Margaret - but the only John  Margaret marriage I could find in Kirkham ??

where did you get the name Coleby from please ??

Thank you for the detail. I'll dig into the siblings a little more.

We are looking at the same marriage. Coleby is how it appears in the 1772 parish register and the handwriting is pretty clear. I believe it to be correct as Coleby is used years later as a Christian name in the family.

It's possible that Jolly is a mistranscription but I'd need to investigate further. There are other Jollys in the area.

Hi Diogenes and Garstonite
Thanks for your questions on my original post which was some time ago.
Just to clarify some comments below. John Trippier married Magaret Coleby at St Michaels, Kirkham in 1772 and this I have seen in the church records. The marriage was not to Margaret Jolly and this was clearly a transcribing error In some of the ancestry websites.
They had 5 children, Martha 1773-77, Elizabeth/Alice 1776-77, James 1778-1855, Martha 1781- unknown and Richard 1784-1868.
I have traced only the James line in detail as this is my direct line but all Trippier’s in the Fylde are descended from either James or Richard.
Unfortunately, since 2014 I have not found definitive proof of where John Trippier came from despite years of trying. This is mainly because I haven’t been able to find what happened to John #1’s family after his father Daniel died. All the indications are that John Trippier who married Margaret Colby is John#1 as it appears a lot of men used to travel across the river Ribble to find work in agriculture in the Fylde area. My only caution is John’s first born son was called James and the practice at the time was for the first born son to be named after the fathers father.
I have traced the whole Trippier line back to a Frenchman called Davidii Trippier who married in Huddersfield in 1636 and I believe all Trippier’s in the north of England are descended from this line.
Hope this helps
Regards
Fred T

Hi Fred,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, especially so long after your post. My own line is descended from Richard and is fairly well documented (though the spelling of "Trippier" changed over the years), but like you I haven't found out for sure where John Trippier came from. I did consider the options as you set them out in your post but also couldn't find anything to prove who's who, not that I have invested anywhere near as much effort as you appear to have done. Interesting that you traced the Trippiers back to this David Trippier in Huddersfield. I will certainly be doing some research on him in the near future.

The Coleby angle is one that interests me, not least because the name gets re-used later on as a christian name. I also believe you're correct that "Jolly" is a clear transcribing error as I've also seen the church records. Although it's not a common name in the region, there are various Colebys in and around Garstang and the Fylde area throughout the 18th century as I'm sure you already know.

Thanks again for your detailed and helpful response & good luck with your future research!
