In 1871 he was an agricultural labourer, but thereafter he was always listed as a Farm Shepherd, that's why i've dismissed the Blacksmith Thomas.

@ Millipede - The Edward burial you found was Thomas's brother. Thomas's son Edward Hides got married and died in East Retford in 1925
