Do you also know why only 4 of children were returned?  What happened to the 5th?

The children were sent to the orphanage because their mother madge was badly burnt in a fire and Herbert return to Newcastle.
Children Doreen,Rita,Hazel,Robert,Cecil, birth are be 1914 to 1920.
My grandfather is Cecil the last child birth in 1920 he was fostered out
To the eckford family in Maitland.l don't know the orphanage name.
Doreen Jessie Riley birthday 22/11/1914
Rita Pearl Riley birthday 21/02/1917
Hazel Lilly Riley birthday 02/08/1918
Robert Lloyd Riley birthday 30/11/1919
Cecil Keith Riley birthday 13/12/1920

Thanks for the information col.  Are you saying that herbert and madge were together until 1925 and that is when he exited to Newcastle?  My grandad  was born in 1922 so just trying to piece together when herbert left and Robert hughes came into the picture.

I have only just started researching for my Grandmother family history when I came across this discussion. I am Doreen Jessie Riley granddaughter & the information I have found is that Doreen mum Maud Riley was also known as a Doolan. It makes it so hard to find information when father is unknown, so I do not know who Maud(Madge) father was Or who was my grandmother Dooreen Riley dad was as well. If anyone is able to help me please let me know .

It appears that she  went by several names.
Madge Hughes - Madge Riley - Madge Doolan.
