I never knew her as anything. I never even knew my father was riley not hughes until  I stumbled across this site and got a copy of his birth certificate.
Dad would never talk about his family so now I am a little  shunned and want to know about his family history

Madge/Maud Riley/Hughes her mum was Amy Skinner & father unknown. Madge's mother Amy Skinner married Stephen Rummery in 1888. But Madge was born out of wedlock & we have no idea who her father was.

Hi Jenn,

My grandfather's mother was Madge Doolan Riley.  His name was Robert James Hughes.  His birth certificate lists him as Robert James Riley.  No father is listed on the birth certificate
I'm trying to find out who grandad's real father was?  Do you have any ideas?

Thanks

Trudi Hughes

Hi there,

I doubt you will find one. As I understand it, that Certificate of Exemption system did not commence until 1943,  Madge HUGHES is findable on electoral rolls at Emmaville prior to that year.  To me, finding her on NSW electoral rolls until 1934 as Madge RILEY and then from 1934 onwards as Madge HUGHES shows she was unlikely to be considered by NSW government as being of Aboriginal descent.
