Bev

That is not true.  You joined in June 2018.  You posted on this very thread....

Hi Bev,

Back in September and October 2018 I posted on this very thread in response to your posts.  I anticipated that you would have followed up with the suggestions I offered at that time re my thoughts

a) that Madge/Maud was not of Aboriginal descent. - She was eligible to vote in NSW State Elections (as Madge Riley until 1934 and then as Madge Hughes)   (reply # 35)
b) I put together some info from several threads for family historians interests - basically the index references for a paper trail (reply # 36)
c) I reiterated that I doubted that Maud/Madge was of Aboriginal descent and noted that 'I cannot see any reason for Madge needing a Certificate of Exemption'.  (reply # 38)
d) I provided live links to NSW State Archives indexes  NRS-11 Applications for certificates of exemption 13-02-1930 to 21-12-1964 and  NRS - 26 Ward Registers  18-01-1916 to 7-12-1928 and NRS-27 Indexes to ward registers 01-01-1916 to 31-12-1938 (reply # 38)  so that if you contacted the State Archives you could ask about Certificates of Exemption, or State Wards Registers or similar.
e) I gave you direct live links to the NSW laws that applied when Doreen was a child- so live links to the NSW 1923 Child Welfare Act and the NSW 1918 Aboriginal Protection Act. (reply # 38)
f) and I noted ' For many decades in NSW children were removed from their mothers under the provisions of the Child Welfare Act.  It did not matter what ethnicity for their parents.  If Madge was hospitalised and required long term treatment for her burns, then it is quite possible that the children were taken into 'state care' until she had recovered sufficiently for them to be returned to her care.   But, in my experience, by returning them to her care is indicating they were not removed under the Aboriginal Protection Act.  I may well be wrong, and I am happy to be corrected.   (reply # 38) ...

On Obtober 6, 2018 I posted further suggestions :  (reply # 40)
Hi Bev,

:) I doubt Madge had Aboriginal heritage, but I have already given you some suggestions to follow through if you were to consider contacting NSW State Archives.  Here's some other suggestions too :
 ;) https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/aboriginal-resources-overview-records

 ;) https://www.findandconnect.gov.au/guide/nsw/NE01008

......

Please do remember that Doreen and her siblings were restored to their mum after a separation of less than three years and likely caused by the time needed for her recovery from her burns injuries.  Medicine had not yet discovered penicillin or any antibiotics.  It would have been a long slow and painful recovery for Madge.

At reply # 43 I provided you with live links to a number of submitted trees :  here they are again.

At that time I suggested that  perhaps you should consider contacting these tree owners  who all seem to have researched Doreen Jessie or her husband’s ancestors:

At reply # 48 among other info I also posted the following live links when noting that I have provided as much information about Hercules RILEY as possible.   I cannot see anything to confirm he had an Aboriginal heritage, but I do encourage you to contact the NSW State Archives and also support groups for help with your claim.

Hi

refer to previous threads. It says madge was badly burned in a fire and the children went into care.
Do you have an information on the fire

Hi Queensland Orgin,

Apart from what has already been posted, I do not.  Perhaps Bev does.

Do you have any information on the fire,  or on the children returning to Madge?

Robert is Herbert Riley son. Herbert and madge children were sent to an
Orphanage in Sydney in 1925 and 4 of 5 children returned to the Hughes family in 1928. Which is madge sister marred name

Majm

Thanks for that. I have seen that in this thread about the fire . I have never seen anything else about it or the children going into care. I have been trying to find information on Madge Riley for some time but keep hitting brick walls. I am just about out of ideas.
