Hello  there Trudi

on the research I have done  it  would  appear  that Robert James Hughes  birth was registered as Riley  as  his parents were not married,  It  is  hard  to  know if Rpbert hughes was in  fact his  father.  but I suspect he was.

regards Jenn

Hi Jenn,

Thank you for the information.  Do you have an idea or theory around why madge riley never divorced her husband?  I'm interested to find out all i can about her and her life.  Any information would be most appreciated.

Thanks so much

Trudi

No I am sorry  I have not  found out why they never divorced... Perhaps  one or either persons  didn't consent to a divorce.

Thanks  for your  reply.  I  had realised  He was no  doubt born Robert Riley  but  used the  surname Hughes.  Do you  know  why  his parents didn't marry

thanks  Jenn

Robert is Herbert Riley son. Herbert and madge children were sent to an
Orphanage in Sydney in 1925 and 4 of 5 children returned to the Hughes family in 1928. Which is madge sister marred name

Hi Col

Just want to make sure that we are all talking about the right robert. My grandad was Robert hughes born in February 1922 with madge listed on the birth certificate but the father unnamed. Is this the one of the  4 kids returned to the hughes family that you are referring to?  If so, how do you know with certainty  that herbert was his father as the birth certificate for grandad did not list a father?  Also why did the children get taken to an orphanage if both parents were alive? And when you say the children were returned to the hughes family  do you mean that they were returned to madge who was by then using the hughes name and living with Robert hughes  who my grandad thought his father was his whole life and indeed appeared to be named after? You also mentionedthat madge's sister's married name was hughes? I'm not understanding how this fits in? Sorry tobe so full of questions its just that this is such significant news for my family  to learn. Any information would be great.

kind regards
trudi
