Scottish Marriage records prior to 1855
« on: Saturday 13 September 14 15:43 BST (UK) »
Hi, hoping someone could help me.

I've been on Scotlands People looking for a marriage certificate from 1808 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.
I found an index on Ancestry.com.  I just would like to know where I go to see if I can get a copy of it for my records.

Thanks in advance for any help!
Sheryl

You can view the record if there on Scotlands people note you might not get much information from it ..Maybe the bride's fathers name or where they were married

This is a link to the information page about OPR Marriages & Banns on ScotlandsPeople.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=554&406

I wasn't logged in but once you are use the same search function that you used to search the statutory marriages index.

On the same page there are links to example images of the OPR so that you can see the sort of information that these entries include.

Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths didn't start in Scotland until 1855. So before that there weren't any certificates. The only records are entries of baptisms, marriages and sometimes a few deaths in the parish church records - known as the Old Parish Registers (OPRs) but they lack detail and are by no means a complete record of everyone.

The OPRs are available on ScotlandsPeople, as well as some Catholic and other non Church of Scotland records. You can search the index and then download an image of the actual record, for a fee.

FamilySearch is free to use and has an index of most, but not all, of the OPR records. It's a good place to start before moving onto ScotlandsPeople for more detail.

AYRSHIRE - Strachan, McCrae, Haddow, Haggerty, Neilson, Alexander
ABERDEENSHIRE (Cruden and Longside) - Fraser, Hay, Logan, Hutcheon or Hutchison, Sangster
YORKSHIRE (Worsbrough) - Green, Oxley, Firth, Cox, Rock
YORKSHIRE (Royston and Carlton) - Senior, Simpson, Roydhouse, Hattersley
