Mary Hocknall 1870-1954
« on: Sunday 14 September 14 10:52 BST (UK) »
My great-grandmother was born in Pleasant View, Thornham Rochdale, on 12 Aug 1870. Her mother died shortly afterwards. Her Parents were James Hocknall and Mary Milne. I can find no trace of her from this date until her marriage to Great-grandad in Sheffield in 1890. I knew her and loved her dearly and would love to know if anyone can help get through this brick wall. I do know her father was a lodger in house next door in the 1871 census but she is not. Eileen

Hi

I cant see any trace of her in the censuses. I would guess that she was probably fostered out as her father couldn't cope with such a young baby, in which case she might be recorded under the name of her foster parents. Have you tried looking for her with grandparents or other relations?

Hi

Looks like the father may have remarried

20 May 1872 at Christ Church, Croft, Lancashire.
James Hocknall  23, Fustian Cutter, Widower, Croft. Father: James Hocknall, deceased, Fustian Cutter

Mary Kemp  21, Fustian Cutter, Spinster, Croft.   Father: William Kemp, deceased, Fustian Cutter.

*****

In the 1881 census I think they are living in Warrington, with 4 children James, William, Ann Jane and Frederick, but no Mary.
Transcribed as HOCKENHALL on Anc*
Ref: Class RG11,  Piece 3796,  Folio 114,  Page 25.

Can't see them in 1891 but by the time of the 1901 census the family are in Sheffield, with 7 children.
Transcribed as HOCKNALL
Ref: Class RG13,  Piece 4382,  Folio 95,  Page 33.
