John Salter from Bloomsbury residing in Hampshire 1891
« on: Wednesday 17 September 14 13:37 BST (UK) »
Please excuse my ignorance in these matters.  Although I have a keen interest in history, I had no real desire to research my family history;  until now.

My interest began when I found out on the 1911 census that my great grandfather (J G Salter)was born in Wanganui New Zealand!  Bearing in mind that I had considered my family to have all been born within the UK and particulary in Hampshire, this new fact was without doubt interesting.

I have since found out that John G's father, also called John was in the 3th battalion military train and involved in the New Zealand wars of the 1860s.

I have tried to find out a little more about John Snr's military history without success.  Forces records website can only rovide basic details.

I have a few questions, but the main ones are:- without resorting to visiting the National Archives, where can I find his military history?  Secondly, I have found him on the census's for 1871 through to 1891, but I can't seem to find any record before that.

Can anyone give me a few pointers please?

His name is John Salter (not sure on middle names), his Army number was 319 (he was a Sargeant) and he is recorded as living in Aldershot camp in 1871 and thereafter in Hound Parish in Hampshire.

Many thanks in advance.

Tony.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat.

Sorry, butI dont really understand what you mean about "without resorting to NA".  If you have found from their catalogue that that is where the records you want are,  then that is where they are!

Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex

This looks like the 1881

Ivy Cottage, Hound, Hampshire

John Salter 48 Army pensioner bn Westminster
Elizabeth 47 wife bn Woolwich
John 14 son carriers assistant bn Wanganni New Zealand British Subject
Amelia 8 dtr bn Kildare Ireland

So, maybe if they cant be found in 1871 they may have been in New Zealand or Ireland, they may not have come back to UK between the two postings, or of course may have gone somewhere else entirely.

Added -sorry just seen you have got him in 1871! ( though I cant see it ... Have you got the ref?)
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex

That's my great grandfather. The information there is exactly what I have from the 1881 census.  It is his father John Snr that I mentioned as being in the Army, as you say born in 1833 or thereabouts.

As for other relatives, there were three other girls born from 1861, although they had disappeared from the family census by 1881.  Names, I think were Sarah, Elizabeth and one other I have forgotten!  I don't have the other details with me at the moment.

I am assuming that John G was born on campaign in New Zealand as his father is recorded as being eligable for the New Zealand medal.

As I have typed this I see that lizdb has posted.

I have them on the 1871 census, but not before, so I assume they must have been out of the country.   Seeing Amelia's  place of birth confirms my suspicion that the family may have been in Ireland.

For military records, I am after his history within the army.  ie enlistment and discharge dates, units served with, campaigns etc.

Hi

We really do need the references of ALL you have found.
Otherwise we are all. separately, repeating searches, rebuilding/checking family links.
A real waste of time and effort, I think you will agree?

I agree with Ray - do tell us all you know! E.g, how do you know about these three girls?
And -full details of the 1871 census? Still not finding them.

The military record doesn't mention wife and children - I have usually only seen that in more recent records. He served in Auckland and Wanganni and also in Ireland (Curragh camp).
