Help with location. COMPLETED THANK YOU
« on: Wednesday 17 September 14 14:29 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the shop that was used by my great-grandfather for his business as a Peruke Maker and later as a Perfumer at 35 St James's Street Westminster in the mid to late 1700's. This is confirmed by Poll and Rate Books.

I think the shop is now occupied by Davidoff a Cigar retailer though probably much changed, but it is a bit confusing as the numbers seem to run consecutively down the east side and not odds and evens like they do now.

The advert I have (attached) mentions a property that is attached and accessed from the rear of his shop at No1 Crown and Sceptre Square. I can find no mention of Crown and Sceptre Square, or a large enough scale map of the year to locate it. If I could find the Square I could probably confirm the location of his shop. Can anyone help, or point me in the right direction

Thanks  Steve

Sorry I do not think so. It is supposed to be behind the East side of St James's Street near Jermyn Street as far as I can work it out.

Thanks anyway

In (eg) the 1851 census you get numbering (east side/ west side) and (north side/south side) .

By 1861 you start to see Napoleonic (odds & evens on opposite sides)

So start at 1851, find "your" address and list who/ what's around it

Then go to '61 and '71 and see what families/businesses are around and what the "new" address is.

John Strype's Survey written in 1720 describes Crown & Sceptre Court as being between Rider Street and Little Germaine Street.  This is exactly where Davidoff's cigars now stand.

So the same numbering but sadly not the same building.   This one looks to be 1920s-ish

(Today's spellings - Ryder Street and Jermyn Street)
