Hi rolnora.
Thanks for that info, i do currently have a subscription to that particular site.
The record you mention is the one i did have as it happens but more importantly, i do appreciate the efforts people have made to help me sort out this enigma of mine.
On balance i feel that my research into this branch of my family is probably sufficient justification for my belief that the 1861 James is my gggrandfather and i will have to accept that his origin will have to remain a mystery, Bolton or Stockport.
Thankyou for your input.
Regards.
Geoff.

Hello jintie2v.
The only Swindells in my family history is James Swindells. I don't know for sure but the Swindells seem to be concentrated in Cheshire, in particular, Stockport and surounding areas. Unfortunately, he is in my dysfunctional family branch and this means that it seems to be impossible to prove anything for sure.
It seems that his involvement with my gg grandmother, Mary Maloney, nee Fahey, born Ireland c.1830, was very short lived, maybe only a year or so but he seems to have managed to father my g grandmother, Hannah Bella Maloney in 1865.
In the 1861 census Mary is a widow and James is with his wife, Anne, who died accidentally in 1864, James was a Greenwich Pensioner, born Stockport and aged 54 (mistranscribed as 34 on 2 commercial sites). James died accidentally in 1865 3 months after registering Hannah Bella's birth and in the 1871 census Mary and family have become Swindells and she is a widow again.
So on Hannah's birth certificate the informant was James, birth address same as his but the father claimed to be Daniel Maloney who is not to be found in any records. Hannah died in 1892 age 28 unmarried but having had my grandmother in 1887. Her death was registered by her brother, Henry, and states that she was the daughter of James Swindells,  Royal Marine, deseased. 3 months later Mary died and again her death was registered by Henry and states that she was the wife of Henry Swindells, ditto, ditto.
So dispite there being no marriage, Swindells/Maloney, Henry fathered my g grandmother and changed the family surname. So, although i am sure that James is my gg grandfather i cannot prove it.
I have his navy discharge papers, he joined in 1824 age 17 and was discharged in 1846 and his length of service shortened by 1 year because he joined i year before reaching 18 y.o. BUT!! his birth place is given as Bolton, Lancashire.
I found a birth/baptism in Woodford, Stockport, in 1807, parent's John and Lucy Swindells and was as happy as larry until i found a death of a James Swindells in Woodford in 1830, age 23.
So that's my Swindells story for what it's worth, probably your Swindells are part of the same wider family, hard to say really unless any of the foregoing rings any bells for you.
I would certainly like to hear back from you as there maybe things we could help each other with, if not now, in the future perhaps,
Cheers.
Geoff.

What a web they have woven !!  Now you're back ( lucky soul )...I'll do some more digging ...but they seem to have come from Prestbury and headed for Rainow where it was just one huge melting pot !!!! Where my Thomas 1740 came from or what siblings etc he had I have no idea as yet...more digging...you may find they hook up , but , as yet, I haven't "gone there"......Phew !
Thought this ancestry would be easy HA!   and unless you can physically go searching ...could be very costly. But this RootsChat is great for help....lovely people out there with a lot more nous than lil''ol' me !!!!
Will let you know if anyone pops his/her head above the parapet ...you never know ...as would any info from you be Greatly appreciated !!

The John Swindells and Lucy Grinshaw i mentioned were married in the parish church of St Peters, Prestbury, 14th August 1804.
John was from Woodford and Lucy from Poynton. I think the Prestbury church covered the general area there abouts.
If you have located swindells in or about Prestbury then there is a possibility they are related to this John Swindells.
Cheers.

Hi Jintie,
Have you tried this website in the hunt for your Swindells.
It's a bit cumbersome to use but in my view well worth the time and effort.
