james swindells born c.1807.
« on: Thursday 18 September 14 11:01 BST (UK) »
Hello all.
James is my gggrandfather. He became a royal marine in 1824 age 17 yo and served 22 years. He was at sea when the 1841 census was taken, unable to find him in 1851 but he appears in the Manchester census in 1861 as a greenwich pensioner. He died accidentally in 1865 just 3 months following the birth of my ggrandmother. Besides the 1861 census, age 54 (wrongly transcribed as 34) i am unable to find a baptism for him. Birthplace according to the census is Stockport but is Bolton according to his discharge papers. I have 3 certificates which name him and his marine status.
Although he has a wife, anne, in 1861, i cannot find a marriage for him which is a pity as it would have given me his father's name.
He just seems to be an enigma so if anybody has any ideas i would be really grateful.
Thanks.
kiwigeoff.

Hello & welcome
Can you clarify that Ann was 45 yo when she had your gggrandmother ?
I notice in 1841 there are no children with them & having a first child at 45 doesn't sound right.
Have you found the family after 1861?

There's a marriage in Stockport in 1842 James Swindells but there are 4 pairs of brides and grooms.  One bride is Ann Orme.

What was the name of the child born in 1865?

Hello jim and milliepede.
Thanks for your interest and replies.
James wife Anne died in January 1864 as the result of an accident, she was burnt to death. My gggrandmother, Mary Maloney then appears to have taken residance with James and in 1865 my ggrandmother, Hannah Bella Maloney was born, James was the informant, his address and birth address the same. Father Danial Maloney , as for previous 4 children, though there is no evidence he ever existed. Mary is a widow in the 1861, 71, 81 and 91 census'. James was killed by a falling wall 3 months after the birth.
I have the family in 1871, 81 and 91 now renamed Swindells and Hannah Bella was a Swindells at her death in 1892.
So James certainly left his mark on the family although others in the family retained the Maloney name.
James was in the Navy until 1846 so i'm picking that he and Anne were just living together and probably not married.
In 1842 James was at sea in HMS Dublin so probably not his marriage to Anne Orme.
So, as you have probably gathered, this is the dysfunctional branch of my family but i feel fairly certain that James was Hannah Bella's father and is named as such on both Hannah Bella and her mother's death certs in 1892.
Swindells is Swindles in 1892, took me ages to find it. You can see the use of both surnames in this census.
Thanks again and any light you can throw on James' birth would be very welcome.
Regards. Geoff.

Thanks for the clarification Geoff.  So Mary Maloney is the mother of your Hannah Bella not Ann Swindells.  And Mary takes the name Swindells.  That was pretty quick after Ann died and before James died for her to move in and have a child with him wasn't it.

Little confused where Daniel Maloney comes in - do you mean he is named as the father instead of James?  Or Daniel is the father of Mary Maloney's other children.

This is an interesting tangle!  The name Swindells caught my attention because I have a Swindells in my family (loosely) but he was Joseph not James.

Have we got Mary Maloney in 1851 with or without a husband?

There is one lodging in Stockport but she is single age 20 cotton winder.  But I guess there were a lot of people came over from Ireland so if we can't find her with a Daniel  :-\

On mine it's down as Swindler :D  Yes can certainly see the mix of names!  There's a Swindells granddaughter and Maloney grandsons.

I'm a bit confused as well.
So do we have Mary Maloney having 4 children with Daniel Maloney & then your greatgrandmother Hannah Bella with James Swindells but the father is registered as Daniel Maloney ?
Hannah Bella was paralysed from birth so where has the information come from that she was your greatgrandmother.
