Hello jim and milliepede.
Thanks for your interest and replies.
James wife Anne died in January 1864 as the result of an accident, she was burnt to death. My gggrandmother, Mary Maloney then appears to have taken residance with James and in 1865 my ggrandmother, Hannah Bella Maloney was born, James was the informant, his address and birth address the same. Father Danial Maloney , as for previous 4 children, though there is no evidence he ever existed. Mary is a widow in the 1861, 71, 81 and 91 census'. James was killed by a falling wall 3 months after the birth.
I have the family in 1871, 81 and 91 now renamed Swindells and Hannah Bella was a Swindells at her death in 1892.
So James certainly left his mark on the family although others in the family retained the Maloney name.
James was in the Navy until 1846 so i'm picking that he and Anne were just living together and probably not married.
In 1842 James was at sea in HMS Dublin so probably not his marriage to Anne Orme.
So, as you have probably gathered, this is the dysfunctional branch of my family but i feel fairly certain that James was Hannah Bella's father and is named as such on both Hannah Bella and her mother's death certs in 1892.
Swindells is Swindles in 1892, took me ages to find it. You can see the use of both surnames in this census.
Thanks again and any light you can throw on James' birth would be very welcome.
Regards. Geoff.
