My great Grandfather was born in Liverpool in 1870 by 1891 at the age of 21 he is living at home with his parents and his proffession is listed as a baker
Sometime between 1891 and 1892 he Meets Ada Cope born 5/8/1870 (in the 1891 census she is a described as a servant living in the next street to the Wainwright s)
Her parents are James and Ellen Cope of Salisbury Street Liverpool and she has been born and brought up in Liverpool, so far so good
Now it gets strange my grandfather is born in December 1892 , however the first attempt at Marriage between William and Ada takes place on the 17/10/1897 at Toxteth Park Holy Trinity church verified by Banns
my grandfathers Birth
However the subsequent dates of other marriages are written in the margin next to each Bann but there is no date of Marriage for William and Ada
The Second Marriage is recorded is 9/8/1912 at St Timothy’s Church Walton on the Hill there is a marriage certificate for this one William is listed as being a Baker
This seems to be the genuine marriage ,so why did they finally get married 22 years after they first lived together
1901 census William snr is 31 (ships Baker ) and Ada is 30 but their children do not appear on the form?? They are living in Kirkdale
1911 census 5 children recorded as born 2 of who are dead.
William snr does not appear but as he was a seaman he may have been at sea at the time
Now it gets very Strange, my mother once said to me when I was a child ,”your fathers family were bakers they went to the West Country “
According to the Liverpool street Directories
1912 William Wainwright baker lives at 9 Cochrane Street St Georges Hill
1913 he is still there
1914 he is not recorded as living there
from another source there is a record of his daughter Ethel( born 1894) being confirmed in 1915 at St Marys Church Redcliffe Bristol
My grandfather lists his Next of Kin on a form dated on 14/6/1916 as his Father William Wainwright 8 Orchard Square Bristol crossed out and replaced by his wife Winifred Wainwright living in Kensington Liverpool , (they were married in June 1916 )
Meanwhile William seems to have contiued his career at sea on the 2/07/1923 he applies for his Merchant Marine Medals he is still living at 8 Orchard Square Bristol-
He dies on, 11th January 1930; Age, 59 years. Address, 8 Orchard Square, redfield Bristol; the burial service is at St Marys Redcliffe Bristol , his wife Ada dies a year later in South mead Hospital Bristol now what is strange is that they lived in the Parish of St George Bristol
St Marys is a grade 1 listed ancient church in the heart of the city and a major tourist attraction , why were they both buried there ?
Their daughter Ethel was a tobbaco factory worker in Liverpool , a few hundred yards from St Marys at that time was a large tobacco factory did she work there
Its Likely that theywere buried in St Marys Burial ground on the bath Road I visited it in September 2014, unfortunatly the Burial ground is neglected and there was no sign of a gravestone (see Photo Below ) During the same Trip I visted Orchard Square unfortunatly the original houses have been demolished but the houses in the nearby streets are still there ,crosschecking a map of the area made in 1945 indicates that the Orchard Square Houses would have been similar ie substantial terraced Houses indicating a degree of prosperity for William and his Family
What we still dont know are :why he moved to Bristol: what contact my Grandfather had with him after that move:and why he was buried in the most exclusive church in Bristol
