I saw his baptism under Buckland St Mary Baptisms 1788-1903 page 38 that someone gave me the email address to look up. It has his name, date of birth, and his mothers name Mary Hayes.

Lateral thinking here! ;D

I was wondering where Weston-super-Mare came into things - and there is a Mary Ann Hayes, b1861, from Weston-super-Mare.
Perhaps it was JHJ's mother who was from WSM? :-\

Also the coal mines were almost certainly those in the Somerset & Bristol coalfield?
Clutton, Radstock, Midsomer Norton areas. Or even Bedminster area of Somerset/Bristol?

Anyway, bearing in mind that this is just supposition, here is that Mary in 1881:
Class: RG11; Piece: 2421; Folio: 135; Page: 19
2 Grosvenor Villas, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset

Carp, Elizabeth  Head  Unmarried  F  57  Lodging House Keper  b Puriton, Somerset
Carp, Mary  < no relationship mentioned>  Unmarried  F  47  b Burtle, Somerset
Collingwood, Jane  Visitor  F  45  Schoolmistress  b Edington, Somerset
Hayes, Mary Ann  Servant  Unmarried  F  20  Domestic Servant  b Weston-super-Mare

It looks like this Mary Ann Hayes got married in 1887 in Axbridge district?
(Which includes WSM)

All coincidental information, to be sure, but right name, about the right age, single at the right time, and a link to that elusive WSM!

The one question that remains is: Why Buckland St Mary? :-\ ;D

I believe Buckland St Mary is on the baptism that I saw. I guess I will send for his birth certificate so I can be sure. Thanks all for the help.

I have his birthday as Sept. 7th, 1885 and death date as July 11th, 1962 in Frontenac County, Ontario Canada. That was his wife coming over on the ship. The oldest girl was not his but he took her as his own. My great grandmother was 8 months along with her 4th daughter when they came over on the ship.

I'm back and I just got my great grandfathers birth certificate. He was born December 7th, 1885. His mother's name is Mary Hayes listed as a servant of Buckland St Mary. He was born in Union Workhouse Chard Parish. His name is listed as Henry James. I would very much like to know anything about his mother. He was born out of wedlock. His mother married but I don't know to whom and she apparently had 3 more children, Jenny, Rose and I believe a boy Jack. This last bit of information I got from my great Aunt (his daughter) but she is now 93 years old and unfortunately she can't remember her Grandmother Mary's married name. Great grandfather and his family came to Canada around 1911. Please any help would be appreciated greatly. I am at a standstill now because I don't know Mary's married name. I do know there are a lot of Mary Hayes listed on the census there. I'm thinking she would have been born around 1869 or 70.

1891 census

James H 5 b Chard
Sarah J 2 b Chard
Census Ref RG12/197/28/6

1901 census
