Osborne confusion!!
« on: Thursday 25 September 14 16:39 BST (UK) »
Hi all!

Am hoping that someone might be able to help me come up with a way to solve my dilemma!!  ???
As well as researching my own family history I am also helping a friend.  However, I can only take his paternal side of OSBORNE back to his Great Grandfather.

Charles Osborne was born c1883 and married Annie Thompson in 1905, Islington, London and had at least 9 children.  Charles was a rat catcher at Smithfield Meat Market where he also worked as a porter. Charles & Annie's son (also Charles) married Jane Welch in Holborn, London in 1928.  Charles a news vendor and Charles senior a butcher.

It is know that Charles senior served during WW1 and went AWOL.  When found he was sent back to fight at the front.  There is speculation that he was possibly born in Fulham, London and may also have died there too around the end of WW2.

My confusion is that there are lots of Charles Osbornes and I can find any concrete evidence to tie in with the correct family!

Any ideas where I go from here?

Regards

Chrissy  ;)

Hi,

A copy of the 1905 marriage certificate should give you the name of Charles senior's father and his occupation; hopefully that wil help you find the family in census records and perhaps go back.

Thanks for your replies!

I thought Edward was his father as saw the record online however, someone else who is researching the same line says Charles's father was not Edward.  I can't get the birth certificate as don't know the exact date of where and when he was born!

Alice Osborne is a witness to the marriage however, I can't tie an Alice Osborne in with a father of Edward!!  = very confused!!  :D :D

Thanks again for your replies!

Yes this could possibly be him as this would fit with the info that we have about Charles.  I have found someone else researching this same Osborne family who has Charles (son of Charles and Alice) as having married Lily Smith in 1914 but, I guess it is possible they have the wrong parents for their 'Charles'.  :D

I wonder if your Charles is part of this family.  They are not consistant with their ages, or places of birth.

1891 - Islington

Ed. Osborn- head - 40 - horse keeper - Bethnal Green
Eliza A.  Oxborn - wife - 33
Rosina Osborn - dau - 18
Jessie Osborn - dau -15
Edward Osborn - son - 13
Thomas Manley - son - 14
Robert Manley - son - 12
Emma Osborn - dau  10
Annie Manley - dau - 6
Chas. Osborn - son - 6
George Manley - son 3
John Osborn - son - 1
all born Bethnal Green

By 1901 they seem to have taken on someone else's children.  Including an Alice

1901 - Islington

Edward Osborn - head - 50 - carman - Hackney
Eliza Osborn - wife - 44 - Mile End
Frederick Osborn - son - 12 - Islington
Alice M. Osborn - dau - 11 - Islington
Mark H. Osborn - son - 7 - Islington
Richard Osborn - son - 6 - Islington
Robert Manley - son in law - 19 - Mile End
Annie Osborn - dau - 16 - Mile End
George Osborn - son - 14 - Mile End

No Charles at the moment

Just going back to your original post. Do you have Charles' birth cert stating his mother is Annie Thompson?
