Definitely Stuck...The Caten Family
« on: Friday 26 September 14 12:26 BST (UK) »
Had some fantastic help tracing family in South Africa...but now stuck.
It concerns the Caten family who I have traced via English Census's to Essex.
I know some of the family went to South Africa because of following marriages...

20th October 1903. Robert Fritz Maurice Caten    =   Catherine Hemming.
Reside Port Elizabeth.            Reside Port Elizabeth.
                                Boarding House Keeper.
At Wesleyan Church. Port Elizabeth. Witness’s: Robert Caten & William Bennett Caten.

28th June 1909. William Bennett Caten not known.  =   Antonia Alma Golifika
                             Reside Bathurst.                             Reside Bathurst.
                              Store Keeper.
At Wesleyan Church. Bathurst.  Witness’s: J. Hawkins + Other .

19TH October 1909. Lewis James Wilson   = Beatrice Alice Caten
                               Reside Port Elizabeth.    Reside Bathurst.
                                 Produce Agent.
At St. Johns Church, Bathurst. Witness’s : Robert Caten & Winifred Alice Hawkins

This is the one I know most about. Lewis was my friends grandfather who went to SA. in 1907
He worked at J Daverin and Co., Importer/Exporter, Port Elizabeth and lived at 112 Cape Rd.
He married Beatrice in 1909 (Robert Fritz Maurice Caten..above) would have been her brother.
I have a transcript of the marriage cert. which is witnessed by one Robert Caten which could be her father or brother according to Census.
DOES ANYBODY KNOW ABOUT THE CATENS. WHERE THEY LIVED AND WHAT THEY DID. WHEN DID THEY GO TO SOUTH AFRICA.
Lewis eventually dies in Cape Town (Anchor Bay) 1924, and is buried in Maitland. He was an Ostrich Dealer.
Survived by a son Leslie Broadbent Wilson and wife Beatrice Alice Wilson..he joins the RAF in England in 1929 aged 16yrs..but we do not know what a happens to her.

Following on, this is the 1901 census:
Class: RG13; Piece: 1639; Folio: 94; Page: 50
York Hill, Loughton, Essex

Caten, Robert  Head  Widower  M  49  Painter & Decorater  b England
Caten, Fritz M  Son  M  27  Painter  b Ponders End
Caten, Sarah  Daughter  F  23  Dressmaker  b Enfield
Caten, Bertha J  Daughter  F  17  Domestic Servant  b Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire
Caten, Lillian  Daughter  F  12  b Loughton, Essex
Caten, Ernest H  Son  M  25  Compositor  b Enfield, Ponders End

so, it looks like Fritz is the same person as Robert?
And Bessey = Sarah?

Hi KGarrad, Gosh that was quick...thankyou for the reply.
This is definitely the family that I was alluding to...The Catens in Essex.
You have picked up on a couple of things...Sarah Keziah and Bessie appear to be the same person with birth date of 1878. Dont know why. Fritz M on the Census born 1874, becomes Robert Fritz Maurice Caten on the marriage certificate. His sister Beatrice Alice I know went to South Africa and Fritz for sure. When...... I do not know despite having searched passenger lists. Also, the name Robert Caten crops up as witness on the marriage certificates. The father and son were both called Robert. The wife Sarah died in 1900. I suspect other members of the family went to South Africa but I cannot prove it. Port Elizabeth and Bathurst appear to be the areas. i have had some fantastic help from from researchers in SA. but the Catens are ellusive.
