Confusing marriage
« on: Saturday 27 September 14 15:16 BST (UK) »
I have a Margaret McLace marrying John Cullen in 1873. She lived in Cherry Lane Liverpool and her father was John McLace On the marriage register. (the name varies on different docs). They had a son, Thomas.
In 1896 at St Joseph's church Liverpool there is a Thomas Cullen son of John Cullen marrying a Margaret McLese of Cherry Lane, father John McLese.
Is it possible that this is just a total mistake in filling out the form and that Thomas' father and mother were put on the form and not the bride?

Hi,

Between 1890 and 1900 there are several Thomas Cullen marriages. It is the marriage of Thomas to Margaret McLese that intrigues me. Margaret McLese is Thomas' mother. I was just wondering if the document is wrong.

Thanks

Hi,

Between 1890 and 1900 there are several Thomas Cullen marriages ....

I'm sure there are, but you specifically mentioned one in 1896, so that's the one I looked up.

Where are you seeing the info about the bride being Margaret McLese, pls?

It is in Ancestry.com. Catholic Marriages, Liverpool. Also there is a site called Liverpool History Projects where you can look up Catholic marriages and baptisms.

The other Liverpool 1896 marriage on FreeBMD is in Q1 offers two possible brides for Thomas

Christina BARTON
or
Sarah POWELL.

The other groom is Martin WILSON.

STG

Edited to add: The 1901 census has Martin Wilson with wife Christina, which leaves Sarah Powell to be the wife of this Thomas Cullen.

Hi again,

We seem at cross purposes. I am not trying to find Thomas Cullen or his marriage. It is just that the Thomas Cullen who appears in a tree I am working on his mother was Margaret McLese and her husband was John Cullen. By chance I came across the church registration with Thomas apparently marrying his mother. I was just wondering how a mistake like that could happen as I cannot find any other explanation.

Thanks

In the register for St Joseph's, the next marriage on the page is Martin Wilson=Catherine Barton.
(Both the GRO index and the Lancashire Marriage Index have Christina Barton).

I'd be rather inclined to think that  Thomas Cullen on the same page married Sarah Powell, as the civil register shows, and whoever filled in St Joseph's register didn't have their mind properly on the task. I notice that the priest's name is different for Thomas Cullen's marriage from all the others on the page. - sorry, I don't think that is relevant.
