As other people have said, it does vary so much.  You just have to give a few of the free ones a go and see which you prefer.

One place no one mentioned is Genuki which is a good place to find out what resources do exist.

For post 1837 birth and death registration, then free BMD is the best site.

For pre 1837 and parish records, family search is extremely invaluable

If you need more specific information or research into specialized areas, then the record offices and archives are the best bet
