Hi all, I’m not having any luck trying to find John Reynolds & his wife in 1871 census. Either they are not included in IGI Familysearch census info or I’m having some brain fade or maybe there has been a mis-transcription – I’m sure someone on here will help point me in the right direction.
So, working back from 1881 census PRO Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 5338 / 69 I have:
John Reynolds age 33 born Haverfordwest, a widower. 5 children born between 1872 & 1878, all in Briton Ferry, Glamorgan. John’s father James Reynolds (my direct ancestor) age 78, born Fishguard, Pembroke. Living at 58 Regent Street, Briton Ferry, Glamorgan
Looking for John's wife's death, there is this entry on FreeBMD in Mar 1880 for Susan REYNOLDS age 27 in Neath (This 'fits' in after birth year of youngest child).
Next, FreeBMD has a marriage for Sep 1870 in Neath.
BATH Susan
Reynolds John
HICKEY John
Hind Esther Ann
Out of the 2 couples, John Hickey & Esther Ann (Hind) can be found in 1871 Census as: John Hickey age 36 born Jordon, London. Esther Ann Hickey wife age 26 born Oystermouth, Glamorganshire. Reg District: Neath, Sub-District: Margam, Parish: Michaelstone, Lower, Glamorgan.
So, this must mean that John Reynolds married Susan Bath and the death in 1880 of Susan Reynolds ties all the info neatly together - or does it?
I cannot find where John & Susan are in 1871, but I did find this intriguing couple though.
1871 Census John Reynolds age 24 born Cummartin, Pembrokeshire. Sarah Ann Reynolds wife age 19 born Neath, Glamorganshire. Reg District: Neath, Sub-District: Neath, Parish: Britonferry, County: Glamorganshire.
I say intriguing because this John was born Cummartin, Pembrokeshire & my chap was born St Martins, Haverfordwest, Pembroke. This John’s age is a good match to my chaps & he is living in Britonferry, Glamorgan where my chap settled & his children were born. Crucially, Susan’s death age of 27 in 1880 is also a close match to this Sarah Ann’s age of 19 in 1871.
So the big question is – could this Sarah Ann names be a mis-transcription of Susan or have I completely missed finding John & Susan?
Thanks for looking. Regards, TonyR.
