The CHARLTON family from the Shetland Isles
« on: Friday 03 October 14 15:23 BST (UK) »
Hi I am trying to find anyone who has been researching the CHARLTON family from the Shetland Isles - the earliest I have is WALTER CHARLTON born about 1824 in Unst, his wife was ANN born about 1800.  Walter was a fisherman crofter and they had TWO children ROBERT born 1837, ALARANDER born 1842.   any help would be much appreciated thank you.

Hi

Could you check your dates, please?
Did he really marry a woman 24 years his senior and become a father at the age of 13? ???

Also , FamilySearch has this family as Charleson;

Alexander Charleson

bap 9 Oct 1842
Unst, Shetland,
son of Walter Charleson & Anne Matthewson

Hi thanks for your help.  I found the info from Family History and it says Walter Charlton was born about 1824 in Unst and his wife was Ann born about 1837 - I can't say whether this is accurate or not unfortunately.  They appear to have come over to Northumberland eventually but the only info
I have is from Northumberland and nothing from the Shetland's apart from the Family History info.

A census check would help you, since the family was obviously in Shetland for the 1841 census.

It can be searched free here:

http://www.freecen.org.uk/

I think that bev may well be right about the name.  There is a Walter Charleson and his wife Anne with a son Robert of the correct age in Unst in 1841, with some older children with the surname Bruce.  Apparently all born in Shetland.

Walter & Anne appear to still be on Unst in 1851 and 1861.

If one of their sons was born in 1837 it is quite plainly inaccurate!

The 1841 census suggests that Walter was born about 1803 and Ann in 1800.

Yes I have seen it thanks - this makes much more sense.  The trouble being I am looking for Charlton's that now appear to be Charleson!.
