mcfall 11th foot 1853

hi everyone,
hope someone can help,
i have found a thomas mcfall service number 895 was i the 11th foot devonshire regiment,
he was born 1813 in maghera co.londonderry,i can find him in the england census 1841 in ligonier barracks,after he is discharged in 1853 aged 40,i can find nothing,i see on his records he served in north america plus it says australian colonies,could he have stayed he after he was discharged.
any tips will be gladly received.

You appear to be quoting from the NA index for him which suggests you have his record from Findmypast.

The 11th served in modern day Canada from January 1838 to June 1840. This includes time at sea. Before this the regiment served in the Ionian Islands. If this is not mentioned on his record he must have remained with the depot.

In 1845 they sailed to New South Wales acting on guards on several convict ships; then Tasmania for 19 months, then back to NSW in August 1848. He almost certainly stayed in NSW, possibly with a free parcel of land. I am sure members on the NSW board can give you further guidance.

To follow his movements month by month you need to look at the muster books which are in the National Archives, and not online.
