In 1861 Ann Miles  nee Snook has her birth place stated as East Knoyle, Wiltshire.  Cross reference that to the SNOOK residence KNOYLE House in Acton Middlesex, home of Ann's son in law's 2nd wife.

Coincidence...

well my small contribution is that Charles's son Herbert (aged 8 in the 1881 census) apparently died in the Shaftesbury registration district in 1887 aged 14

MMM maybe not.

1881 census says he was born in Stourton Wiltshire - but then again we all know how often birthplaces are wrong.

OK just so we all know - Amy Elizabeth is not part of our immediate family - her father was John Edward BALCH, a policeman, and they were living in  Chitterne St Mary in Wiltshire in the 1881 census.

And Eliza Bertha Balch (bn 1871) died in 1872
Still cant find her parents.

So the only 2 children that we do know of were Herbert William (from first marriage) who died at age 14 & Edith Emma (from the second marriage).

Cant find any marriage for Edith before 1910 at freeBMD. There is a marriage for an Edith Emily Balch in Portsmouth in 1908, but I dont think thats the right one.

So the 3 generations we have in 1881 are as follows. 
Ann Smith had a daughter Emma Smith who married a Snook and had 2 daughters -  Emma & MaryAnn Snook

IGI shows Emma Snook's father was John Snook.
