Just reviewing the information two Joseph Balches:

The Inn Keeper:  40 yrs old in 1851
The retired Farmer: 61 yrs old in 1871

Probably the ??? same person (Charles' Father)? Born around 1810

The Licensed Victualler: 72 in 1851

Born around 1779.  Could this be Charles' Grandfather?

Allan

I was thinking along the same lines back on page 6 but a couple of people rightly pointed out that we don't have any concrete evidence of this father/son link - just the coincidence of names, trades, place of birth and age gap.

Definitely need a volunteer to visit the Somerset records office (or is it Wiltshire? - I think I read somewhere that Brewham/Bruham is now in Wiltshire and the records were moved there - blowed if I can find this again)

Allan

Allan, thanks for that. I feel a bit sheepish now, but that is not a new thing.

It is a long time since I researched my family tree "in the flesh" rather than on the internet, so I dont really remember all the detail. I know the parish registers for Brewham will be in a county record office, which just isnt feasible for most of us to get to. Am I right in thinking we could see them in a mormon library centre if we ordered them? I think that would be on a fiche, or a microfilm, is that right? Does anyone know the lead-in time for ordering stuff to view? There is a library here that I could take the time to visit but if the reel did not arrive before the end of July we would miss the challenge deadline.

The memorials for the Huntleys give us the chance of a possible descendant.  Walter Albert was Charles M Balch's nephew by sister Charlotte.  He was still single in 1901 but obviously married Dorothy Gwendoline.  Ideas of how to find if they had children?  Electoral rolls for Bruton? Walter was postmaster and saddler in 1901, family business continued?
Still looking for Charlotte's other son Allen J born c 1867, last seen in 1891 in Tiverton a bank clerk.

Back to trying to find the link between John HH Green and Charles M Balch (1901 census).

We had in 1881 a brother of John HH, Sydney Balch Green age 5 born Swindon.  In 1901 Sydney, age 25 born Swindon, was a medical (surgeon?) at 37 Condace? Road Fulham with his aunt Clara Suffolk a widow age 54 born Penkridge Staffs living on own means.

1871 Clara A G Suffolk born c 1843 Penkridge was with husband Thomas H Suffolk born c 1842 Nuneaton.  Clara Adelaide G Jones married Thomas Henry Suffolk March qtr 1870 Nuneaton.

Back to Sydney as Clara's nephew - guessing that therefore his mother must have been Clara's sister, Matilda Rebecca Jones married John Green March qtr 1870 nuneaton.

brilliant !!!! Excellent lookup request and excellent response.

1841 census for South Bruham.Ref. 934_02

   Address:- "The Bull"

Joseph Balch 30 yes
Harriet 30 yes
Walter 3 yes
Julia 1 yes
Charlotte 1 month yes

So we have Charles M's brother Walter (married Georgianna Oborn), and sister Charlotte (married Albert Huntley) that we knew about. Brother Henry was only 8 in 1851.
But we now also have Julia.  Did she die before 1851 or was she elsewhere visiting (a grandparent would so good!)?
Can we find out anything about The Bull South Bru/Brewham?

I found a death for a Julia Ann BALCH in q.Jun 1844, Wincanton 10/375.  Could be Charles' sister but no way of proving it without a certificate or a parish record :(

Had a Google around for the Bull Inn (I love looking for pubs :) ) and apparently it's still in business.  Still looking around for a photo of the pub where our hero was more than likely to have been born but so far without success.
