I am trying to trace my Great Great Grandfather. I believe he was born in Prince George's County Md. Is there a list of slave owners in Prince George's County Maryland between 1800 and 1850?

Hi Lenore , welcome to Rootschat. There are many records to do with slavery on the Ancestry website, slave registers etc. Worth having a look to see what's available. The US censuses have a lot of detail, but I think you need to first know the slave owner's name. Is there the name of a slave you can provide us with? Franh1946

Thank you for your response. This is what I know. My Great Great Grandfather was Henry Alphonse Jackson. I know he was born a slave in Md 1823 and I believe his place of birth was Prince George's County Md.  He escaped to Chatham Kent Canada and is listed in the 1861 Canada Census with his wife and 5 children. Two of the younger children escaped with him. He later had two more children after 1861. He returned to the US around 1869. I believe his parents may have been George and Catharine Jackson both born about 1800. I traced them through his nephew who is listed on the 1880 Census George W Jackson born 1855. I do not see Henry listed on the 1850 Census, but he may have been gone by then. I want to be sure of this connection. The reason why I wanted a list of slave owners in Prince George's County is because I have an 1861 map that shows a C. Jackson (Col'd) who owned land near Broad Creek and I want to know if her husband(George) was given this property by his owner and if his owner's surname was Jackson.

I would think that this is highly likely, and personally I would start looking for a slave owner named Jackson in Md before I looked elsewhere,
Good luck.

Hi There,

The 1840 census lists two Jackson's in Prince George's owning slaves - Israel with 3 & Jasper with 8.
They both appear on the 1850 Slave Schedules as well. Israel having 6, Jasper having 11. The sexes and ages are included on this one. Also listed is an Andrew Jackson with 2.

I'm not sure if this will help, but it's a start.
