I have come into some letters sent from German ancestors to Australian ones.
I now know Sophia is my 3xGgrandfathers sister her daughter is Augusta Bucholz (nee wolf) she had a son Herbert or Kristin Herbert who had three daughters.

They were members who lived in Germany while the Berlin Wall was in place, they express wishes to emigrate to australia.
How would one find out if they did come to Australia or look into family history births, marriages, work history etc in Germany?
And with such little information and requiring translations?

My first port of call would be here:
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/explore/migration/naturalisation.aspx
You can check for their names, and also check for names of relatives who you know were already living in Australia, as they may have been sponsors.

You might need to flexible with your spelling of their names as variations probably occurred. :)

Added: If you need translations there are several people on rootschat who should be able to help you.

Also, depending on dates and states the family may have come to you might find some bmd indexes on the appropriate state website. Try googling bmd victoria (or whichever state you expect them to have come to) - the right website is usually close to the top of any search results.

Good luck.
