Garness Farm, Pembrokeshire

As an Oriel descendent I recently visited the Crunwere/Marros area about which I have read so much, in these posts and elsewhere. I was keen to see the location, in Garness, of the former farm and mill, once occupied by so many Oriels over such a long period of time, and I thought I had found both.

The OS map however shows another Garness Farm in Marros and I had a quick look there too.

Could anyone please be kind enough to confirm whether the Garness Farm in the lane along from the former Llanteg school garden is the correct Oriel location? And possibly also why there seem to be two farms with the same name so close together?

I am still a novice with all this - many thanks!

Many thanks Stan. It was lovely to see the map - and while looking at it I discovered the location of another Oriel house I had been searching for too!

Now all I need to understand is why there seem to be two farms of exactly the same name, just a few miles from each other?! Does anyone have any ideas?

Sorry to be really late arriving at this post.

Garness Mill (down past the old school as you say) is one connected with the Oriel family.  As is Garness Farm which is located slightly SW of the Mill but access via a different road which is called Ledgerland Lane.

These Garnesses have, as far as I know, no connection with the Garness that is between Marros and Pendine.  No idea why the names should crop up like that but I suppose its like 'Rose Cottage' which can crop up in any village - though why 'Garness' I have no idea.

The two in Crunwere parish - which have now spawned to four - which are Garness Mill, Old Garness (which is the original Garness Farm), a new build Garness Farm and another dwelling called Little Garness - took me a while to get my head around that!

According to B G Charles' Place Names of Pembs the name 'Garness' was first found in 1712 and spelt GADENES, but recorded in 1723 as Gardener's Mill and 1726 as Garness Mill - he thinks the earlier forms may mean it was named after a person.
In 1787 Land Tax show a property called Garness Rocks.
The 1841 census mentions Garness Mill but by 1851 two properties are shown.

Of course as the book only covers Pembrokeshire this does not help to see how the Pendine Garness originated!
