3 x great grandfather
« on: Monday 06 October 14 15:16 BST (UK) »
looking for help in locating my 3x great grandfather born 1820 stratton gloucester Henry Townsend, Located him on 1851 census but can't trace him till 1891. I believe its him as his occupation is shoe maker and that would follow with his son and grandsons occupations, but I also have an occupation for him as a plasterer on his sons George marriage certificate I wonder if any one could help me with this .

Thanks Sarah

You don't say where he is in 1851 & 1891.  There is a Henry Townsend, widow, living in Tetbury, Glos in 1881, but he was born in Tetbury.  As far as I can see none of the others that come up on the search were born in county.
McLeod, McKean, Hepburn (Fife)
McGowan, Gowan (Dumfriesshire, Ireland)
Nelson, McKean (Lanarkshire)
McKean, Mulgrew (Lethbridge, Alberta)
Boswell, Plumb, Lyon, Stokes, Pemberton, Crawford, Threadgold (Cheshire)
Tierney (Scotland/Ireland)

Is this him in 1851:
HO107; Piece: 1468; Folio: 357; Page: 15
Henry Townsend  37/ plasterer/ Stratton Glos.
Maria Townsend  51 ? should probably be 31.
George Townsend  4
Harry Townsend  2
This looks like George in 1871 Wales:
RG10; Piece: 5450; Folio: 86; Page: 3
& 1881:
RG11; Piece: 5410; Folio: 32; Page: 3

& a possible for Harry in 1861;
RG 9; Piece: 933; Folio: 42; Page: 16

Are you sure the 1891 census is the right family?
There this death registered in Sept. 1854;
Townsend  Maria     Kensington  1a 38
There's a burial for this Maria;
23/7/1854
Add: Camden St. Kensington aged 34.
There's also a death for a Henry Townsend 1861:
Townsend  Henry     Kensington  1a 40
& his burial at All Souls Cemetery:
21/10/1861
Add. 1 Gordon Place Camden Hill Kensington
Aged 46
May not be them of course.

I think it is them as they are the right ages & in the right place.
Also there isn't another Henry & Maria Townsend in London at that time.
It would be highly unusual for a family to disappear for 40 years & then reappear again.

Once again thanks for info much appreciated.
How would I go about finding Henry's Mother and Father ? Would I be able to get a copy of his Birth Certificate?
Thanks Sarah

You would need Henry's marriage cert.
Sue's find looks very likely
