Marriage of John Steel 1888

Hello

John Steel, born in 1849 in Lanercost married a woman named Frances in 1888. They had three children, Jennie born in 1891, Richard, born in 1890 and Catherine, born in 1889. Catherine and Richard were born in Yorkshire according to the census

What was the maiden name of their mother? I have checked the free bmd and found no compatible marriages and I do not think they married in Scotland

John Steele married Fanny Nichol at Hexham - March 1888 - 10b 362 (as per free bmd)
