Samuel Wild, 1830, Lancashire
« on: Tuesday 07 October 14 19:30 BST (UK) »
Hello.  Samuel Wild is my great, great grandfather.  His death certificate, dated Feb.15, 1861, indicates age as 30.  The 1851 Census for Harwood gives birthplace as Little Hulton, and parents as William (born about 1805, Ratcliffe/Radcliffe) and Hannah Wild (born about 1804, Blakeley/Blackley).  I cannot find any record of birth for Samuel, but I see that a William married a Hannah Bottomley in Manchester in 1828 - is it possible he was christened in Manchester?  It is very confusing.  Any assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated   Thank you.  Regards.

Hi Reg

On the 1841 census, I note, that there is a 4 year gap between Thomas and William, could Hannah be his second wife, and Hannah is not the mother of the first 4 children

Hi MargP.

Thanks for the welcome, and the interest in my post.

Samuel's father, William, was the informant.  I also wondered if William remarried, and have been hoping that details of Samuel's birth and/or christening would answer that.

Reg

What about Samuel's siblings? Do they have the same, or different, birthplace listed in the 1851 census? It might pay to check any of the birthplaces listed for the children; it is far to often that we find errors like this in the census returns.

it wasn`t unusual for children to be baptised when they were 4/5/6/7 especially if the family were on the poor side - or dad worked away
what was Williams occupation ??
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html
I wonder if Hannah is - Annis ??

Baptism: 25 Jun 1837 St John the Baptist, Hey, Lancashire, England
Samuel Wild - Son of William Wild & Annis
    Abode: Roe Street Saddleworth
    Occupation: Spinner
    Baptised by: J. Mattinson
this would make Samuel 6 or 7 at baptism  ??...in any case , we need to at least research this baptism if only to rule it out ...

as Saddleworth is Oldham area - and I can`t find a marriage for William Wild to Annis - I did find this - BOTH under age ....can anyone tell me if a Weaver can become a Spinner ?? if not , we can rule this marriage out

Marriage: 21 Feb 1830 St Mary, Oldham, Lancashire, England
William Wild - (X), Weaver, Prestwich
Hannah Whitworth - (X), Spinster, Prestwich
    Witness: James Jackson; Ralph Jackson
Married by Banns with consent of parties by: J. Fallowfield
