A family mystery .....freeman of Sydney
« on: Wednesday 08 October 14 11:16 BST (UK) »
There is a story in my family about one of my ancestors being made a freeman of Sydney some time during the 19th/early 20th century. I am trying to find out whether this is true & if so what the circumstances around it were.
Can anyone tell me whether there are any records regarding freemen of Sydney please & if so how I can access them?

I can only find lists on Wikipedia of more recent recipients. Have you tried searching the newspapers : http://trove.nla.gov.au/   ? I searched trove for " freedom of the City of Sydney" and found an article , dated 28 Feb 1913, in the Sydney Morning Herald which discusses Scott of the Antarctic. It mentions that a Mr Ernest H. Llewelyn suggests that the Freedom of the City of Sydney be established and that Lady Scott be made the first recipient on her visit to the City , indicating that the honour was not in existence at that time. I would imagine that there would have been a report in the newspapers if your relative received the Freedom.
