Robert Fone died 1868, Longton
« on: Wednesday 08 October 14 23:30 BST (UK) »
I've just come across an interesting curiosity in my family research regarding a Robert Fone of Longton, Stoke-on-Trent (died 1868) whose name I found while doing a random off-chance search on the Staffordshire name indexes for court records. It turns out there was a Robert Fone tried for a felony (serious crime I'm guessing) in Longton in 1868...then I realised the Robert Fone I had in my family tree died in the same year at a young age (about mid 20s). It lead me, rather chillingly, to think could he have been hanged for whatever it was that he did? I'm debating whether or not to order a transcript of the case (they charge for this) so I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to how I might otherwise find out the outcome of this case or any other clues.

Thanks.

Relax!

I can't see his name listed at: http://www.ivanlea.net/sub_pages/executions.htm
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Local newspapers would be your first port of call. But it appears you may have nothing to worry about.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

Thanks guys. I guess it must have been a strange coincidence, although I'm still curious as to what he was on trial for and why he died soon afterwards at a young age. I think I will go ahead and order the transcription for the trail afterall.
