Miles Weatherhead
« on: Thursday 09 October 14 12:39 BST (UK) »
Miles Weatherhead died 1752 in Kirkby Lonsdale, but never been able to prove his birth!  His will showed he was a well known clockmaker, and left property to his wife, including houses, shops, barns, orchards in Kirkby Lonsdale, Dales and Mossdale, a hamlet near Hawes, and Tile Close, Biggins. His wife was told to sell property to ensure their children were well educated.   How can I find deeds etc of such property that may give information of who owned it previously, or information as to his father if inherited, which I am sure it must have been.   margaretgreen

Thank you for help regarding property owned by Miles Weatherhead (Wethred) around 1750. I have a copy of will saying he left houses, shops, land around Kirkby Lonsdale and yorks.  Who can I contact to see deeds, proof of ownership which may give names of previous owners?

Deeds applied more to ownership of land rather than the property which was often leased to a second party.
Although land may stay within a family over many generations the property on it often changed hands many times in what was called an assignment of lease.
These were drawn up by solicitors & are the documents most relevant to you.
There is no central repository & many are deposited at local archives.
As the properties were in Yorkshire it's going to be that archive that is most likely to hold them.
