Shaw/Cameron Marriage Extract - Scotland/England - Help Please
« on: Thursday 09 October 14 13:40 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have been researching my family tree for a fair while now and so far, nearly every person has lived and died in Scotland.  However, my great-great grandparents, William Shaw and Isabella Fraser moved several times between Scotland and England.  They married in 1866, St Columb, Cornwall.  As my research to date has mainly been done through Scotlandspeople, I am not sure how I would go about acquiring this extract.

I was wondering if anyone had any information about the marriage of William and Isabella?  In particular, I would like to know the names of their parents.  From census information, I think William's parents are William Shaw and Isabella Cameron but I would like to confirm this, and to find out who Isabella's parents are.

Any help would be most appreciated.  Thank you!

You could purchase a copy of their marriage certificate from the General Register Office.

You will need these details below.

Dec 1866
William Shaw
Isabella Fraser
Registration District St.Columb
Volume number 5c
Page number 191

The certificate should give fathers names/occupations (but not mothers)
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Would this be the right family in St Austell in 1881?

William Shaw 51 travelling draper Nairn
Isabella Fraser Shaw 50 Inverness
Isabella 13 Cornwall
William 11 Inverness
Alexander 8 Inverness

1871 Scotland census has a Thomas Cameran brother 24 - so who is he a brother of?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Might be a 2nd. marriage for Isabella Fraser, maybe she was formally Cameron.
Agree you need the marriage cert.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your help.

Millipede, the family you picked out in the 1881 census are indeed the correct lot from what I can work out.  In 1861, William Fraser was in Cornwall, I think.  The family can be found in Inverness in 1871 and then Cornwall in 1881.  In 1891, they are in Campbeltown, Ayrshire, where William and Isabella eventually died.

It is funny you should mention the Camerons/Camerans.  My reason for wanting to see the marriage extract is that William and Isabella's son filled out their death certificates.  He gave both William and Isabella's mothers' maiden names as being Isabella Cameron.  It's possible, of course, that they both were Isabella Camerons, but I was reluctant to add the names to my tree in case he had accidentally confused the names of his grandmothers (I have previously come across a death extract with incorrect information on it in my tree).  I thought that if the mothers' maiden names had been on the marriage extract, I would have been able to double check!

If you can find the fathers from the marriage cert. we should be able to find the mothers.
In 1871 he says he came from Dunlichity. There are a couple of William's b. C.1830 on the 1841/51 census including this one in 1841 in Dunlichity:
William Shaw 50
Bell Shaw 45
William Shaw 10
Alexn Shaw 5
Mary Shaw 40

Hi there,  I have a William Shaw who was married to Isabella Cameron.  They had 3 children that I know of, Donald Shaw b 1824, Angus Shaw b 1822 & William Shaw b 1829, although I suspect they had more children than that, I just haven't had a chance to follow that line yet.  Born, lived & died around the Dores, and Daviot & Dunlichity area.  If we are on the same line, get back to me and I can give you more info. Cheers

Hi Vikki23,

If it helps, Cameron, Shaw & Fraser are North West Scotland names so your kin may have descended from areas such as Skye, North Uist or around those areas ?

Re. William Shaw married to Isabella Cameron.  William's parents were John Shaw & Mary Fraser who I think were married around 1774 in Dores (Inverness-shire)
