St Lukes, Middlesborough......
« on: Thursday 09 October 14 18:01 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, wondered if anyone could help me, I am looking for any info on a place called Brynteg/Brinteg (not too sure on the spelling) it was a child/adolescent unit/ building within the grounds and attached to the side of St Lukes mental care hospital in Middlesbro, However the entrance to this place called Brynteg was round the corner from the St lukes Entrance in a road called Bell Vue Grove, (st lukes entrance was on marton Rd).
I don't actually know what Brynteg was for ?! and I have no family to ask now, years ago my mother told me it was because I wet the bed !! I cant remember how long I was in there and she wouldn't speak any further,
my GP has no history of it as I've moved several times round the country - 'some' stuff is missing from my records !
I have been given a variety of answers over the years, a childrens home/a rehab for disturbed kids, ect,
I do know there was the Hutton unit and a couple other units on the grounds too but am solely interested in Brynteg and what a child would be in there for,
I am now 52 and need a bit of closure to questions in my mind, it drives me mad not knowing exactly what this place was for.
appreciate any help/info  anyone can give me.

Hi Fleur,

I can empathise with you & I hope you get the info. you are looking for.

I too was in a Children's home or something similar while my mother was in hospital giving birth to my younger brother.

Things happened in that time frame (a few weeks)? which carved bits of my character/fears etc. for the future & who I am today.

Unlike you, I don't have a name or an address although I know the town.

My dad told me the reason I was in there was simply because he was working full-time & there was no family to look after me while my mother was in hospital to give birth to my brother.

I know I was in there for more than 2 weeks as my Dad told me that the staff had asked him not to visit me until after I'd been in for 2 weeks.

Reading your story has ignited a spark & I want to find out more about that time/place/where etc.

Good luck with your search.

Hi Annie, well i also wish you all the very best, its all we can do i suppose, at least we know we arnt alone ! (sadly), and we can think of each other on our journey to find answers and hopefully our inner peace,
journey thru life for some of us can be a tough one, shaped by our sad early experiences - that leave us deeply scared for life.
i send you a mahoosive hug for your trip down memory lane and hope there is a peace at some point (for us all) xx
and again - anyone with 'any' info however trivial it may seem on Brynteg in aprox 1972/73/74 (no later i don't think) and why children went in there i would be very greatfull.

From Google Book Search
From 1953 when it opened, 'Brynteg', Belle Vue Grove was used as a child psychiatry out-patient unit. From 1961 it has been used as a department of child and family psychiatry for both inpatients and out-patients. The History of Middlesbrough by William Lillie 1968.

MIDDLESBROUGH Department of Child and Family Psychiatry, 'Brynteg', 26a Belle Vue Grove, Middlesbrough, Teesside (St Luke's Hospital) Consultant psychiatrists Dr G. L. Davies, The Residential Psychiatric Treatment of Children - (Page 325) by Philip Barker - 1974.

oh stan thanks so very much, so as you say - the unit was for 'family and child' - not sure what to make of that as I do remember my father visiting a couple times, mum once at the beginning, so am getting nearer, but intrigued as to the 'family' & child bit ! hopefully I will find out what I was in there for one day, or at least 'generally' what the unit was for. am going to look up that author and info on 'family & child' psychiatry in the 70's as an inpatient,  many thanks stan.
again - any info - however small - I am truly greatfull, thanks to all who have replied so far. xx

Hi there, I too went to Brynteg as a child and it has provoked so many memories by reading your post regarding this subject.  I don't know if there is any means to send a pm on this site but please feel free to if you wish

Hi I was in and out of brynteg for most of my childhood from 1959 to 69ish I cannot remember how long at a time weeks months  I suppose you don't need to know what time it is or what day it was when you are their very day istl the same I remember we used to go to the main hospital to goto the pictures and that was it. My mother would not speak about hrynteg I asked her about it when I was about twenty four and she got upset and we never spoke again about it. Was a children's physchiatric hospital hope I spelt that right.
