Suddell / Sudall / Sudell - West Ham/Leytonstone
« on: Friday 10 October 14 12:51 BST (UK) »
Looking for help/information to solve a family mystery – my wife is investigating her ancestry and is looking for any information about, or descendants/relatives to her great-grandmother , Elizabeth Emily Suddell, (born 1882) and her son, my wife´s grandfather,  William (Ernest) Suddell born 19 January 1904 in the Union Workhouse, Leytonstone.  Elizabeth Emily´s parents are believed to have been William John Suddell (born 1863) and Caroline Davis (born 1862). There are three different spellings of the surname on the Census for West Ham, sub-district Canning Town, at varying addresses in the area:- in 1881 Sudell, 1891 Sudall, 1901 Suddell and 1911 Suddell.
Please PM me if you have any information or believe you are a descendant of the Suddell family.

Hello and welcome to RootsChat
Do you have Elizbeth Emily's birth certificate?

There is a tree on A******y which names her parents as Henry Sudelland Eliza Ann Harris

1891
13 Brunell St West ham Essex
Henry Sudall Head M 58 general labourer Hereford
Emma wife 58 Hereford
Henry son widower 36 general labourer Hereford

Frederick son single 20 W Ham
Ernest son single 20 W Ham
Elizabeth granddaughter 9 W Ham
Charles Grandson 3 W Ham

This looks like her birth:
Elizabeth Emily Suddell

Volume:

Page:

& a possible marriage:
Elizabeth Suddell
1910 Jul-Aug-Sep West Ham

Henry's wife Eliza Ann died 1885 so possibly mother of Elizabeth but not Charles.
Re. the above marriage. She married William Fleming & went on to have 3 children, twin girls & a boy.

Thanks everyone so much for the input.  This is the mystery I am trying to solve.

My single name was Fleming.  My grandfather is the William (Ernest) Suddell born in Union Workhouse, Leytonstone in January 1904 to single mother Elizabeth Emily Suddell.  My father discovered in sorting papers after the death of my grandparents, that his father was not a Fleming but a Suddell and we have a copy of his birth certificate in the name Suddell obtained in 1968.  My grandad never said anything to his children - there are no adoption records to be found. But his marriage certificate to my gran states his name as William Ernest Fleming.  So it seems that none of us should have been Fleming and am wondering even if Grandads marriage to Gran was legal in that he got married in the surname of his step-father. Very confused been trying to find information for ages.

It wasn't illegal to change one's name unless it was for unlawful purposes & it was quite common even for legitimate children to be given the new husband's surname.
The Adoption Act didn't come in until 1927.
Not having the surnames we should have probably applies to most of us somewhere along the line me included.
To find out for definite who her father is you would have to get Elizabeth's marriage cert.

William Sudell married Caroline Davis 1881 West Ham.She also died in 1885 so could also be Elizabeth's mother.
So who does Charles belong to?
Oh dear poor William, married again in 1890 & his 2nd. wife died same year while giving birth.
