I've just noticed he is wearing specs.  I couldn't work out what that mark was near his R eye.

Close up of eyes attached,  I can't see evidence of any glasses, but may be I need them !!!!

Yes, maybe you do Brit - much more obvious in your close up!  ;)  Particularly on his right eye.

 But removed in your full photo.  Yvonne's restore makes them clearest.

My hand is not very steady to draw them in, but . . . . .  They are rimless which doesn't help!

I have spoken to an Aunt and an Uncle and neither of them ever saw their Father wear glasses.
I would have thought them inappropriate in military uniform. Perhaps it is the deep set large eyes? Have a look at him on the left.
