New to this.
« on: Monday 13 October 14 10:44 BST (UK) »
Hi

This is my first post.  I have traced my father's line of the family to Barony Scotland.  However both my great great grandfather and great great grandfather said they were born in Ireland.  Their names were William Battisby (Battersby) and Esther Rae.  Their parents were William Battisby (Battersby) and Rachel Gordon and George Rae and Catherine Finlay respectively.  Esther said she was born in Londonderry (whether city or county not sure).  Newtonards has been mentioned for William.  He was a weaver when he married Esther Rae in 1826.  They were strongly Presbyterian.

Sorry I should have more precise. I have traced William and Esther back to 1826 when they married. What I am trying to find when and where they were born in Ireland. Also their parents William Battisby and Rachel Gordon and George Rae and Catherine Finlay presumably also born in Ireland. I have traced all the Scottish connection. It's just the Irish connection. I can see a trip to PRONI to look at the Presbyterian records.

Thanks for the replies so far.

With names like Rae & Finlay I would think they were Scottish.

My theory at the moment is that the familys originated in Scotland but went to Ireland when Cromwell shipped the Scots and English over dispossessing the Catholics. Apparently most of the Presbyterians originated from Scotland. The nearest point of NI to Scotland is only about 22 miles away. Battersby as a name apparently originated in Yorkshire. I can't find them in the Scottish records.

I did find a record of a birth of Ann Battisby to a William and Rachel but nothing for a William

That Theory of protestants exported from Scotland to Ireland sounds quite a good one to me. I've also got people who are hard to place between Scotland and Ireland. It can - sorry - be really hard to "prove" the earliest origin. Good luck with your search, perhaps it may be a good idea to post on the Scottish and / or Irish boards, as you actually seem to have quite a lot of information - if anyone can help, it'll be the really clever people on here. You're right too about"Battersby" and its variants are indeed North of England names.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Hi, a wee bit late to the party.

I'm trying to trace my 3x great granny on my paternal side. Margaret Bebbington nee Battersby was her name, her father was William Battersby. She married William Bebbington (1828 - 1890) in Jan 1852 in Great Budworth (St Mary's) and had ten kids between 1854 snd 1875, one of the census records o have (from 1871 i think lists her lists her as being Irish), she died in 1887 in St Helens.

I'm trying to trace her family, and wonder if the one mentioned above in that census (not sure what date?) Could be them?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

David
