There are 8 public trees on Ancestry for this family.

None of them has a mother for Donald Sutherland, born 1825?!

Have you seen the free ebook 'History of the House and Clan of Mackay' by Robert Mackay?
It has a lot of information about the Sutherland family.

Donald & Helen married 1863 Methven. Do you have their marriage cert?
Donald son of John & Christy was a hand loom weaver before marriage & his father was an ag. lab.
Is this them?

Hi Jim1,

Given that the string of ancestors as listed is correct, then I go back to "ollec" the alleged father of Freskin de Morovia (Flemish) b abt 1130!
Yes I have the marriage cert for Donald and Helen m 1863.. their son John David Cameron Sutherland came out to nz in 1883 (my gt grandfather)

Thanks Bev, this is where I obtained the connection above, just wanted to confirm from other sources, as some of the earlier stuff might have been unreliable.
Have just been to Helmsdale museum/archives, as I had hit a wall with William Sutherland & Catherine Polson.. that gave me a clue to pursue this

Hi kgarrad, Donalds Mother was Christy Bannerman or Christina

Hi again Jim1,

Donald Sutherland was born abt 1827 to John & Christy Sutherland (nee Bannerman), 3rd born
out of 7 children (William, Alexander, Donald, John, David, Isabella, Cameron), and Donald ended up in Liverpool as a silk Merchant. This could be the same family as you mentioned, although, around the same time there was a another family.. John & Christy Sutherland (nee Sutherland).

My Christy Sutherland (gt x3 Grandmother) was the daughter of Alexander Bannerman and Isabella Bruce.

BTW David Sutherland drowned at sea at Portgower in 1842 at 13 yrs, and his brother Cameron died in 1845 at 10yrs old.. there is a memorial stone at Helmsdale cemetery laid by their brothers.. rather sad!
John & Christy are also at helmsdale cemetery
cheers
Ralph Sutherland

Because John & William Sutherland are such common names you need to be able to go back each generation with absolute certainty.
There's seems to be a huge gap of 250 years with 6 generations not having any dates attached.
What have you proved as fact ?

The marriage cert for Donald Sutherland b 1827 to Helen Ross 12/3/1860, has John Sutherland & Christina Sutherland (nee Bannerman) as Donald's parents. Their & families existence is proven via census records etc;
John's (b 1792) parents are William Sutherland (b abt 1736) and Catherine Polson according to 2 independent family trees. William is "Kilphedder" of Kildonan Strath, and had a brother Robert.

The "history and clan of MacKay" by Robert MacKay gives a narrative of descendants from alexander (Kilphedder) b 1491 as listed above.. with a William Sutherland still alive when this book was written in 1829, and "with issue". My task is to try and prove who this "William" is... is he the same one that I have, that married Catherine Polson? ... I am still trying to confirm this!  :)
