Address Query - Completed with Thanks
« on: Thursday 16 October 14 16:30 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My Gt Gt Grandparents lived at 162 1/2 Sherlock Street in Birmingham.  Does anyone know what the 1/2 would relate to with property?  This is the time of the 1871/81 census.

Many thanks.

They lived in half of the property.
Quite often above a shop but not necessarily.

I think these days we would write the address as 162A?

Thanks Jim.  That would fit in with his trade as a Butcher.

Thanks KGarrad.

If he had his own shop he might be in the B'ham trade directories under that address.

I've a few copies of Kelly's directory where he is mentioned.  Alongside 162 1/2 he also had 123 Hope Street.  Finally, the family ended at 274 Sherlock Street.

In Sunderland there were quite a number of streets that had a half included in the number. A number of houses were built as two flats. The layout of these flats gave the upper flat its own stairs leading up from its own front door. They were numbered as, say, 14 and 14½, instead of 14 and 14A
