Italians interned in second WW
« on: Friday 17 October 14 19:00 BST (UK) »
I wondered does anyone know why some Italians were sent away to the IOM and others were just sent a few miles inland.  My G. father Pasquale Simeone, was sent to Pontardawe from Neath with his Welsh wife and children.  Could it be because he was married to a Welsh girl?
Does any one have any photos of the cosy cafe at Windsor road about 1911-1915 the cafe was run by the Ullo family who had come from Maesteg late 1911.Pasquale and his brother Matteo had come over from Italy to live with the family firstly at Maesteg then at Neath. Matteo was electrocuted at the shop around 1915.  Jacqui.

Hi Jacqui ...

Welcome to Rootschat!

The subject of Italians being sent to internment camps on the Isle of Man was covered in a recent "Who Do You Think You Are?" programme featuring Tamzin Outhwaite.

This gives some more information: http://www.manxnationalheritage.im/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/CG4-Internment_Web.pdf.

I'm still unsure why some were sent out of the U.K and others like my Grand father were only moved a few miles inland

The National Archives has some information here

I think the destination was down to how much of a threat to national security you were perceived to be.
