PICKEN
« on: Monday 20 October 14 02:36 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out if there are any of the PICKEN family in the Randalstown area. My Grandmother , MARY AGNES SHARKIE nee PICKEN was supposed to be from that area and some place called WHITESIDES CORNER. Both my GM and GF , HENRY SHARKIE. have passed on  a long time ago but they lived in Belfast in Ardoyne Village and later Glenside Parade. There was also talk that she may have been from CULLYBACKEY.

According to one database, Henry's father was John and Mary Agnes' father was Thomas.

PRONI Will Extracts:
Sharkie Henry of 4 Glenside Parade Belfast retired corporation tram driver died 29 November 1950 at Belfast City Hospital Lisburn Road Belfast Administration Belfast 9 April to Norman Sharkie lorry driver. Effects £675 7s. 8d.

This Thomas Picken is in Cullybackey area but not sure if he is Mary Agnes' father-
Probate of the Will of Thomas Picken late of Craigs County Antrim Farmer who died 3 May 1917 granted at Belfast to John Steed Farmer and William Shaw Solicitor.

Just got some more information on Grandmother.
Mary Agnes Picken.. Born Nov/8/1889.. Married.Henry Sharkie..July/31/1916..St.Annes Cathedral.
Died..March/29/1971..Buried in Soldierstown, Moira.
Fathers name..Thomas Picken  Mothers name..Sarah Bankhead.

On another note, I was told that the Pickens have or had a pub in Randalstown within the last 10/15 years.I also seem to remember, as a child, visiting a farm in the Randalstown area owned by Pickens, that would have been in the mid 50's

If you google picken & randalstown you'll see lots of hits about the pub.

With the additional information you posted it's much easier to find records of the family (all Ballymena district in civil index).

Thomas Picken (c1847/c1851), son of Thomas, married (8 Jan.1889) Sarah Bankhead (c1852/c1857), daughter of Joseph.

Note: in 1901 Thomas listed as publican but agricultural labourer 10 years later.
1. Mary Agnes (8 Nov.1889)
2. Thomas (31 Jan.1892)
3. James (10 Mar.1894)
4. Sarah (20 May 1896).
