Collins, Parker, Pearmain families in London's East End
« on: Tuesday 21 October 14 11:57 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the family of Elizabeth Ann Parker, born 1902 in West Ham/Bow, London. Her married name was Collins, and on her marriage certificate her father's name was given as Edward or Edmund, deceased. She died in 1944 of cancer. I can find no birth details that make sense, although there may be links to Fanny Parker, who had a child of that name at that time, but not by Edward or Edmund. I have the Collins side of the family way back to 1760s, but the Parkers have disappeared!
Any links to the East End would be appreciated.

Hi and a warm welcome to Rootschat!

Sorry, few questions-

Where does the Pearmain name in your title come in?
Where did the 1902 birthyear and wHam birthplace come from?

Have you found her on 1911 census? Sorry we aremt allowed to do look ups for thatone

Does the marriage cert give anoccupation for her father? Is the doubt over his name due to poor writing, or is he actually recorded as Edward or Edmund, implying he used either name?

What about this birth registration?

September qtr 1901
West Ham district     vol 4a, page 83

Parker, Elizabeth Ann

Fanny Parker is single in 1911?! ::)

If Elizabeth Ann was illegitimate, then she may have invented a father's name for the marriage certificate, in order to look "respectable"!

Thanks, yes that's Fanny, but unfortunately the birth certificate of her daughter Elizabeth Ann has no father's name on it. I assume that is because Stephen Horton was the father of most of her children, but he was still married, with one son (Hubert??). On Elizabeth Ann Parker's marriage certificate to Thomas Edward Collins she states her father's name was Edward (Edmund) deceased, so either Fanny was telling porkies, or this is not the right Elizabeth Ann. Can anyone confirm this???

Pearmain is the name related to the Collins side of the family-- I have no problem with them as they are well documented back to the 1700s in Norfolk and beyond, and were rope makers in the East End from the 1850s onwards. The only blockage I've encountered is on the Parker side, where everything stops with Fanny, Stephen Horton and "Edward". Unfortunately, that is the vital link, and I'm stuck!!!! The only other possibilities, where the father's name is right, involve families outside East London. As Elizabeth Ann died in 1944 and her only descendants are well into their 80s, very little is remembered of her, other than that she was definitely born in West Ham.

If your Elizabeth Ann is the illegitimate daughter of Fanny, and she does not name a father on the birth cert, then you will never know the fathers name. Elizabeth could well have made up a fathers name for her marriage cert.
Strage though, if Fannys relationship with Stephen Horton was long term, and she was with him over the time of Fannys birth and for at least 9 yrs after (till at least 1911) you would have thought Elizabeth would have given the name oif Stephen for her father. So that does make you wonder if the one who married, ie your one, is this one.

The other poissible scenario is that your Elizabeth Ann is not the one who is the illegitimate dtr of Fanny, but a different one whose birth you have not found.

Who are the witneses at your Elizabeths marriage?
