Thanks for this, antiquesam.  It is so interesting.  I was wondering only yesterday what kind of boats the pilots would have used and you've answered this for me!  :)

Thanks so much, Stan, for this link.  It looks full of fascinating detail.  Can't wait to start reading it!  :) 

I came across what might be John Stephenson's burial notice - 8 January 1837, aged 44.  Hope he didn't meet with an accident in connection with his work.  I'll need to see if I can find anything in the local paper of the time.
