Family History

Hey guys, I've been trying to trace my family history but all I've got to go on is my Granddad who served as an RAF engineer. Does anyone know anywhere I can find records without having to pay?

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Which war did he serve in - WW1 or WW2

Over 60% of WW1 service records were burnt during the WW2 blitz

For WW2 service records - see here for info

If you are researching his FH other than his service - please give us his name/birthyear/birthplace and any other details you have for him and we will try to help

He didn't serve in either of those, although one of my great uncles fought in WW2 in the army, Leslie Humphreys his name was.

When and where was he born?  Between 1895-1936 there were over 100 birth registrations for that name so without more info we have no way of determining which is the correct entry

You can start by using FreeBMD.org.uk, and tracing his death, marriage and birth records.

But to go back further, you will need to know his parents - and that normally means buying certificates!

Once you are back to 1911, you can use census information - but that will require a subscription to a genealogy site (Ancestry, FindMyPast, GenesReunited, for example).
Possibly your local library will have free access to one of those sites.
